RUBIGO is part of the Bucelas Producers and Bottlers Association.

The integration of Rubigo into the Bucelas Producers and Bottlers Association (APEB) represents more than an institutional link — it is the affirmation of a clear commitment to the preservation, appreciation, and promotion of Bucelas wine, particularly the white wine from Bucelas produced from the Arinto grape variety.

The role of APEB in promoting the value of Bucelas producers.

The Bucelas Producers and Bottlers Association (APEB) was officially formed on September 28, 2022. Currently composed of 16 producers, it brings together some of the main producers of Bucelas with a common goal: to protect and promote the wines of the Bucelas DOC, guaranteeing the continuity of a unique tradition in Portugal.

Just like the purpose of the Rubigo brand — “to protect a wine, to protect our history” — APEB also plays an active role in preserving the identity of this region and valuing its wine-growing heritage.

The history of Bucelas wine and its international recognition.

Bucelas wine has a long tradition spanning centuries. It is believed that the Arinto variety was already cultivated by Phoenicians and Romans, being one of the cornerstones of the history of Bucelas wine.

Over time, this wine gained international renown.

  • It was referred to by William Shakespeare as “Charneco”
  • It became common practice in the English court.
  • It was taken to England by the Duke of Wellington, where it became known as “Lisbon Hock”.

The Bucelas Demarcated Region, created in 1911, benefits from a specific microclimate and an exceptional terroir, which contribute to the uniqueness of these wines.

Characteristics of the Arinto grape variety in Bucelas

The characteristics of the Arinto grape variety find a particularly distinct expression in Bucelas. This terroir allows for the production of a Bucelas white wine with its own identity, characterized by:

  • Citrine color and clear appearance.
  • Fruity and elegant aroma.
  • High natural acidity
  • Strong mineral content

These characteristics make Arinto de Bucelas a fresh, complex wine with excellent gastronomic qualities, and it is now widely recognized and awarded nationally and internationally.

Rubigo Bucelas: authenticity and expression of terroir

Rubigo Bucelas, a single-varietal Arinto wine, began production in 2016 with the aim of interpreting the best that the region’s terroir has to offer.

The result is a wine:

  • Mineral
  • Fresh
  • Balanced
  • With a strong personality

More than just a wine, Rubigo Bucelas establishes itself as a way to continue the history of Bucelas wine, connecting past and present in a contemporary expression.

Rubigo and APEB: a natural connection

Rubigo’s entry into APEB is therefore a natural consequence of its positioning. Both entities share the same purpose:

  • Promoting Bucelas wine
  • Protecting the authenticity of DOC Bucelas
  • To give visibility to the excellence of the Arinto grape variety.

At a time when consumers increasingly value origin, authenticity, and history, this connection reinforces Rubigo’s role as one of the producers in Bucelas committed to the continuity of a unique legacy.
